Decorative Coil Pot: Lesson Plan 4 weeks
Objective- Students will use basic clay techniques to create decorative coil pots; using some of the tools and techniques I am going to demonstrate.
Briefly discuss the history of coil pots with references and images from Ancient Greece.
Anyone worked in clay before?
Resources: Clay, Modelling tools, Rolling pin, Slip, Wooden boards, Glaze, Brushes, Water pots
Tools & Techniques:
· (Students to gather round at front)
· Introduce tools: hands, (pinching/ burnishing) rubber kidney, and modelling tools, rolling pin.
Demonstrate key techniques:
· Coils: forming and joining
· Joining clay & attaching: scoring, using slip as glue.
· Imprinting with stamps, wallpaper, material etc.
Week 1: Designing
Students brainstormed ideas of what should be included and begin sketching 3 designs. (To be continued as homework)
Thinking of the form, colours and how they would make it in clay.
Week 2: Making
Recap of techniques from previous lesson. (Through question and answer.)
Students roll the slabs a bit flatter, and then use tracers to cut out circular bottoms. (Cello tape, or lids from containers)
Continue to build pots using coils. Students can choose to continue adding plain coils directly on top of one another but also may build their pot using “fancy” coils. Students roll coils into swirls, bend them into zig-zags, or even form them into letters or shapes before attaching.
Week 3: continue
Continue clay work and demonstrate glazing techniques.
Week 4: Glazing
Once pots are dried and fired, students can add color with glaze. Alternately, you can paint or even stain these.
